This study compares traditional Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) and emerging water electrolysis methods (PEMEC and SOEC) for ammonia production, evaluating their economic viability and CO2 emissions under varying electricity prices and carbon intensities. Results show that PEMEC is most cost-effective at very low electricity prices, SOEC gains competitiveness as prices rise, and SMR is preferable above 0.08 /kWhe, with CO2 emissions depending heavily on electricity carbon intensity; projections indicate SOEC will become highly cost-competitive by 20302040.
