Environmental and Health Issues in Unconventional Oil and Gas Development (Second Edition): Chapter 13 - Environmental justice issues in oil and gas development

The field of environmental justice (EJ) is closely tied to oil and gas development (OGD), and understanding this discipline is necessary to frame a discussion of the health and environmental impacts of OGD and to promote solutions. Broadly, this chapter will provide a brief overview of the EJ movement and a framework for discussing adverse health and environmental impacts. We will highlight the disproportionate impact of OGD proliferation on racially and socioeconomically marginalized populations, including indigenous communities, and close with a discussion of solutions that promote EJ.
