Additives may be present in amounts higher than 50% within plastic objects. Additives in plastics can be gradually released from microplastics (MPs) into the aquatic environment during their aging and fragmentation because most of them do not chemically react with the polymers. Some are known to be hazardous substances, which can cause toxicity effects on organisms and pose ecological risks.

Excessive withdrawal and contamination of naturally occurring freshwater reserves have led to a global water crisis exacerbated by climate change. Desalination can augment freshwater supply but has an associated energy, environmental, and economic cost. Distributed systems coupled with renewable energy have the potential to make clean water affordable, accessible, and sustainable.

Many anthropogenic chemicals now exist in our environment, but we still have insufficient information about their risks or impacts. There is an urgent need to increase the scale of capability to assess this planetary crisis. Here, we focus on important opportunities for cooperative and intersectional analytical and social science solutions.

Knowledge of ecosystem-size influences on river populations and communities is integral to the balancing of human and environmental needs for water. The multiple dimensions of dendritic river networks complicate understanding of ecosystem-size influences, but could be resolved by the development of scaling relationships. We highlight the importance of physical constraints limiting predator body sizes, movements, and population sizes in small rivers, and where river contraction limits space or creates stressful conditions affecting community stability and food webs.

Synergetic management of waste activated sludge, heavy metals (HMs) and CO2 for their valorization and cyclic utilization is rarely reported. Herein, we employed sludge-derived extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and HMs in wastewater to fabricate a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) for electrochemical CO2 reduction. This approach atomically dispersed Ni at each nanofiber of the GDE.

There are anywhere from 5 to 8 priority antibiotics in typical wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) whose concentrations exceed the maximum allowed, out of 12 priority antibiotics designated by the World Health Organization as the species to pose severe health hazard than others. If the priority antibiotics to deal with could be reduced to just one or two, such reduction would greatly simplify the construction and operation of the treatment plants.

Introduction: Access to affordable and improved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities is essential for people's daily lives, and it is the primary goal of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG-6). However, achieving this goal is a significant challenge for many countries, including India. The aim of this study is to assess the progress made towards achieving SDG-6 targets in Indian districts, states, and Union Territories (UTs) and to identify clusters by measuring spatial inequality of WASH coverage in India.

The pandemic of COVID-19 has imposed tremendous pressure on public health systems and social economic ecosystems over the past years. To alleviate its social impact, it is important to proactively track the prevalence of COVID-19 within communities. The traditional way to estimate the disease prevalence is to estimate from reported clinical test data or surveys. However, the coverage of clinical tests is often limited and the tests can be labor-intensive, requires reliable and timely results, and consistent diagnostic and reporting criteria.

Thermo-responsive polymer is becoming a potential water purification and water harvesting material. To clarify the water diffusion characteristics, the desorption ratio of liquid water and water vapor for a poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) was researched by the multi-scale method. Firstly, macro and micro structures for the hydrogel with different water content were characterized. Second, the dynamic moisture preserving status of the hydrogel during the desorption process were tested. Thirdly, the dynamic liquid-vapor desorption rate was quantified.

The electroreduction of nitrate has emerged as a promising global strategy for water purification in the face of harmful nitrate in wastewater. However, the usually low concentration of nitrate in wastewater poses a great challenge to this process, thus necessitating more in-depth studies to optimize its efficiency. This perspective article briefly explores the various electrochemical pathways of nitrate reduction, including the conversion of nitrate to ammonia, the conversion of nitrate to dinitrogen, and the C-N coupled reduction process.
