The genus Elizabethkingia comprises Gram-negative, nonmotile, nonspore-forming aerobic rods in the family Weeksellaceae. These nonglucose-fermenting organisms were long included within Flavobacterium and later Chryseobacterium because of their yellow pigmentation and phenotypic similarity to other environmental nonfermenters [1]. Molecular studies in 2005 confirmed that they formed a distinct lineage, and the genus was renamed Elizabethkingia in honour of Elizabeth O. King [2].
