Cats evolved in complex environments which have resulted in an animal that is flexible with regard to the environments in which it can survive and thrive. Cats can live in hot climates, and cold places, they can survive on a variety of foods, and they reproduce easily. Combining these qualities with the general attitude from people that cats are self-reliant, little consideration has traditionally been given to the environmental needs of cats. In many parts of the world, this is now changing as cats are not only popular pets, but they are also becoming a valued companion animal.
