The technologies needed to remove and treat air pollutants differ by the type of pollutant. Aerosols require different techniques than those needed for gas-phase pollutants. Aerosol controls are based on buoyancy, drag and gravitational forces, and filtration mechanisms. Gas-phase controls are often based on sorption, especially absorption and adsorption. Treatment may also include chemical reactions to detoxify the air pollutant. These are explained and demonstrated using example calculations.
