Bioplastics have been proposed as a potential solution to address the environmental impacts of conventional plastics, but their production from virgin biomass can still result in significant environmental impacts. Biowaste, including food waste and agricultural residues, represents a promising feedstock for bioplastic production, offering potential waste reduction and revenue generation benefits. However, there are challenges associated with using biowastes, such as the variability of feedstock and collection and transportation systems. This chapter discusses the environmental sustainability of biowaste in bioplastic production, including a life cycle assessment of bioplastic production from biowaste and a comparison of its environmental impact to conventional plastics. Case studies are presented to illustrate the potential benefits and challenges of biowaste utilization in bioplastic production in this chapter. Strategies for overcoming the challenges, potential for biowaste for sustainable and circular economy in bioplastic production are also discussed in this chapter. Finally, directions for future research and development in the field of bioplastics and biowaste utilization are outlined.
