Health inequities are differences in health which are unnecessary, avoidable and unjust. Health, food and nutrition inequities have been well documented in lower and higher income countries. These inequities need to be addressed across the life course through a social determinants of health lens embedded in the social ecological model, taking structural racism and discrimination into account. Programs are needed to facilitate economic and physical access to healthy foods, opportunities for physical activity and stress coping in all countries. Addressing inequities is crucial for national development, the ability of countries to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, and the health of our planet.
