This chapter introduces a psychosocial approach to understand and address sleep health in the population and its behavioral underpinnings. It defines key psychosocial constructs from selected social behavioral theories and describes how these constructs can be utilized by public health professionals to develop interventions that promote healthy sleep behaviors, with the ultimate goal of improving sleep health. This chapter covers sleep health as defined by sleep duration, sleep quality, and other dimensions such as sleep timing. The psychosocial framework in this chapter views sleep within a broader public health framework and as a component of overall health.
