The United Nations Global Compact, with support from LexisNexis Legal & Professional, has launched a new effort, Business for the Rule of Law (B4RoL), to engage the business community and legal profession in advancing the rule of law, good governance and corporate sustainability. In 2013, LexisNexis presented the Global Rule of Law Business Principles to the Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, to join forces and develop the B4ROL effort.
Strong rule of law is essential as a foundation for economic and social development. The Business for the Rule of Law Framework seeks to advance the rule of law by engaging responsible business to support the building and strengthening of legal frameworks and accountable institutions – serving as a complement to, not substitute for, government action.
‘The rule of law is crucial for promoting economic growth, development, human rights and access to justice. Where the rule of law is strong, people and businesses can feel con dent about investing in the future. The Business for the Rule of Law Framework provides guidance to the private sector and other actors. I call on businesses everywhere, and of every size, to explore what more they can do to support the rule of law and build lives of dignity for all.’ Former United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon
