Heavy metals removal from water sources is a serious concern in the whole world. Various technologies have been developed for removal of heavy metals. Nanotechnology is an emerging technology which is gaining attention and various nanomaterials have been developed for removal of heavy metals from polluted water sources. Nanomaterials have excellent features as large surface area, high adsorption potential, nano-size, and excellent optical properties. In this review, we focused on various nanomaterials including metal-based nanomaterials, metal oxide nanomaterials, biochar-supported nanomaterials, and their potential applications in removal of heavy metals from wastewater. The promising viewpoints of nanomaterials in environmental remediation future directions have also been suggested.
