The HIV pandemic has triggered many innovations in the health sciences and in the health sector. These include innovations in health information systems and digital health interventions. This chapter highlights use cases from two countries, Ethiopia and Nigeria, where the adoption of a health information exchange (HIE) enabled improvements in the delivery of patient-centered health services, and patient-level data use. Both countries use the OpenHIE architectural framework. The two case studies are examples of how low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) can adopt HIE principles in one health program to gain essential implementation experience that can inform scale-up, and adoption of similar systematic approaches in the wider national health system.
