Food security and nutrition

This study examines the impact of living conditions on cognitive function in older adults in China, and explores the role of plant-based dietary patterns in mitigating the negative effects of poor living conditions. The key finding is that living in fair or poor conditions was associated with an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment, and this association was more pronounced in the "Low-stable-decreasing PDI" group compared to the "High-rapid-decreasing PDI" group.
This study examines the role of women’s leadership in the Wahana Usaha Jaya Cooperative in Bandung, Indonesia, in promoting household food waste reduction and community engagement. Findings show that WUJ’s spiritually motivated and economically empowering strategies effectively encourage waste reduction, particularly among women, despite ongoing infrastructural challenges. The study highlights that women-led, community-based cooperatives offer effective, context-sensitive models for urban environmental governance and advancing food security in the Global South.
This chapter supports SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting sustainable agrifood systems and efficient land-use practices that enhance productivity while reducing environmental impact. It also advances SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) through its focus on carbon-neutral agriculture and responsible land management to mitigate climate change and protect terrestrial ecosystems.

Foods are essential for life, but foods can be life-threatening for people with food allergy. This collection of articles from the April 2025 issue of JACI: In Practice provides up to date information on many important aspects of food allergy.

The SAHARAPONICS project introduced a low-cost, water-efficient aquaponic system in Sahrawi refugee camps to improve food security and nutrition in arid conditions. Using locally sourced materials and solar power, the system produces fish and crops while reducing water use by up to 90%. Despite increasing daily workload, community feedback highlights benefits in food access, economic opportunities, and empowerment, demonstrating the project's potential for sustainable development in water-scarce, vulnerable communities. This project supports multiple UN SDGs, including clean water and sanitation (Goal 6), zero hunger (Goal 2), good health and well-being (Goal 3), poverty reduction (Goal 1), sustainable cities (Goal 11), and responsible consumption (Goal 12).

Sustainable Goat Production in the Changing Climate, Volume , 1 January 2025

Goats are known as a low-impact livestock animal, in part because they require much less water than other meat and dairy producing livestock. This chapter investigates the impact and tolerance of water limitation on goats during heat stress and in times of water scarcity.
This study evaluated Universal Free School Meal (UFSM) schemes for 4-11-year-olds in four high-poverty London areas over six years, with longer-term data for two schemes.
The conflict in Sudan since April 2023 has displaced many academics and students, disrupting education and causing financial hardship. The study highlights how war-related inflation and destruction have worsened food insecurity and healthcare destruction, emphasising the urgent need for international aid to support recovery and rebuild the academic sector.

Rapidly increasing human population and food animal populations are correlated with emergence of new zoonotic infectious diseases. Dependence on a few species of plants and animals for most human food may contribute to food insecurity.
The article explores the associations between three healthy dietary patterns (DASH, aMED, and HDS) and homeostatic dysregulation (HD), a measure of aging-related physiological dysregulation, in a large prospective cohort from less-developed ethnic minority regions in China.
