The latest analysis of SDG-supporting research focusses on SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. The results of this analysis were presented during the World Travel Market exhibition – the world’s leading global event for the travel industry – in its 40th year. Covering the period of 2014-2018 and providing insights using metrics such as scholarly output, field-weighted citation impact and relative activity index.
Key findings from the analysis include:
- Worldwide scholarly output in the field has a strong annual compound growth rate of 12% (compared to 2% for all research fields)
- International collaboration is important in this field with high- and low-income countries both collaborating internationally on approximately 61% of their research
- A field-weighted citation impact of 1.17 shows SDG 11 supporting research is cited more often than research in all fields
The source for the analysis is Scopus, the largest database of peer-reviewed literature. We took an iterative approach, conducting a keyword search to define the field, in consultation with experts.
