Persons with disabilities form a significant proportion of the global population, majority of which are women. The United Nations Convention guarantees persons with disabilities equal rights to reproduction and healthcare access. Similarly, the Sustainable Development Goal 3 targets improvement of the health and well-being of individuals including persons with disabilities. However, women with disabilities have not been given close attention, particularly in developing countries.

This book chapter addresses goals 11, 15, 12 and 13 by examining the ecological principles that provide a foundation for resilient and sustainable agriculture that supports rural livelihoods.

Pathways towards a defossilated sustainable power system for West Africa within the time horizon of 2015–2050 is researched, by applying linear optimisation modelling to determine the cost optimal generation mix to meet the demand based on assumed costs and technologies in 5-year intervals. Six scenarios were developed, which aimed at examining the impact of various policy constraints such as cross-border electricity trade and greenhouse gas emissions costs.

This book chapter addresses goals 7, 9, and 13 by reviewing the prospects and constraints for bioenergy development in Africa to ensure sustainable bioenergy production in the future.

This book chapter addresses goals 15 and 17 by providing an overview of educational programming used across cheetah conservation organizations, including considerations for designing, implementing, and evaluating such programs for success.

The Africa Regional Data Cube (ARDC), based on the Open Data Cube infrastructure, is a technological innovation that layers 17 years of satellite imagery and Earth observation data for five African countries. This report identifies the key enabling environment, data management and sharing factors that affect the operationalization of the ARDC and makes recommendations to inform the scale-up of the technology, furthering SDGs 9 and 17.

Despite the great potential of mobile data to support the delivery of the sustainable development agenda across sub-Saharan Africa, access to the data remains a great challenge due to real or perceived barriers. In order to address gaps in timely data that provide information on the SDGs, a multistakeholder workshop was held in Nairobi, Kenya, in February 2019, contributing to SDGs 9 and 17.

In May 2019, GIZ partnered with the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data and the Governments of Kenya and Ghana to organize a joint peer learning workshop for partners engaged in SDG implementation and monitoring from both countries. The aim of the workshop was to share and learn from each others experiences in the area of SDG monitoring and engage in a technical cross-country exchange, furthering SDG 17.

The cost-effectiveness and reliability of waste collection services in informal settlements can be difficult to optimize given the geospatial and temporal variability of latrine use. Daily servicing to avoid overflow events is inefficient, but dynamic scheduling of latrine servicing could reduce costs by providing just-in-time servicing for latrines. This study used cellular-connected motion sensors and machine learning to dynamically predict when daily latrine servicing could be skipped with a low risk of overflow.
