Rural development

Rural development plays a critical role in the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in ending poverty (SDG 1), achieving zero hunger (SDG 2), ensuring clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), and developing sustainable communities (SDG 11).

Rural areas host a significant proportion of the global population and are central to agriculture and food security. Addressing rural development is key to SDG 2, which aims to eliminate hunger and ensure access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food all year round. This is achieved by promoting sustainable agricultural practices, increasing productivity and incomes for small-scale farmers, and improving land and labor conditions.

Further, rural development is tied to SDG 1, as poverty is predominantly a rural issue, with three-quarters of the world's poor living in rural areas. Strategies to alleviate rural poverty include improving access to basic services, infrastructure, and social protection systems, and supporting resilient agricultural practices that enhance food security and increase household income.

Access to clean water and sanitation (SDG 6) is another area where rural development plays a crucial role. Many rural communities lack access to safe and affordable drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities. Investments in rural water and sanitation infrastructure are not only essential for health and wellbeing but also contribute to poverty reduction by reducing healthcare costs and increasing productivity.

Finally, SDG 11 seeks to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. While the focus is often on urban areas, it also includes rural settlements. It's important to promote sustainable rural development, ensuring access to basic services, improving connectivity and mobility, and preserving the cultural and natural heritage.

Moreover, rural development cuts across other SDGs, including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). By addressing the unique challenges faced by rural areas, we can make significant strides towards a more sustainable and equitable world.

To achieve rural development, we need to embrace integrated approaches that consider social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Fostering rural-urban linkages, promoting cooperative efforts, investing in infrastructure, and providing rural areas with access to markets, technology, and education are among the strategies that can contribute to sustainable rural development.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) in croplands is a key property of soil quality for ensuring food security and agricultural sustainability, and also plays a central role in the global carbon (C) budget. When managed sustainably, soils may play a critical role in mitigating climate change by sequestering C and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. However, the magnitude and spatio-temporal patterns of global cropland SOC are far from well constrained due to high land surface heterogeneity, complicated mechanisms, and multiple influencing factors.
This chapter advances goals 2, 3 and 5 by examining indigenous traditional food-growing techniques and their role in sustainable farming. It advocates for more study and support for these techniques and innovations which are mostly driven by local women.
This chapter advances goals 5 and 11 by examining sustainable traditional ceramic-making techniques used in construction and for other household uses. There is a focus on the importance of women potters' role in the preparation of the naturally-derived materials.
This case study uses survey and satellite data to help better protect those working in agriculture in Kenya and Tanzania against drought and climate change, helping to advance SDG 2 and 13.
Over US$60 trillion is predicted to be spent on new infrastructure globally by 2040. Is it possible to meet UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (develop infrastructure networks) without sacrificing goals 14 and 15 (ending biodiversity loss)? We explore the potential role of “no net loss” (NNL) policies in reconciling these SDGs.

This study empirically examines the effects of school toilet provision on the primary-school attendance rate in Kenya. Using over 4200 school-level observations between 2013 and 2015, the results consistently show that an increase in the school toilet availability per student significantly raises the primary school attendance rate among both boys and girls. Moreover, the effects are larger for girls than for boys, and especially for pubescent girls.
Agricultural wastes are readily available in farming communities and can be utilised for off-grid electrification as an alternative to diesel generators. This work evaluates for the first time the life cycle environmental sustainability of these small-scale systems in the context of Southeast Asia. Rice and coconut residues are considered for direct combustion and gasification, and livestock manure for anaerobic digestion. Overall, anaerobic digestion is the best option for 14 out of 18 impacts estimated through life cycle assessment.
Economic development projects are increasingly applying the mitigation hierarchy to achieve No Net Loss, or even a Net Gain, of biodiversity. Because people value biodiversity and ecosystem services, this can affect the well-being of local people; however, these types of social impacts from development receive limited consideration. We present ethical, practical, and regulatory reasons why development projects applying the mitigation hierarchy should consider related social impacts.
